{"id":39,"date":"2020-02-05T07:37:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T14:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/painvalley.com\/?p=39"},"modified":"2020-03-04T20:55:36","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T03:55:36","slug":"when-pain-defines-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/painvalley.com\/?p=39","title":{"rendered":"When Pain Defines You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.psychcentral.com\/chronic-pain\/files\/2013\/07\/hammer.jpg\" alt=\"hammer\" width=\"190\" height=\"249\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-171\" \/>Since my back surgery 2 years ago, to the day, pain has defined who I am.\u00a0 I have made a hobby and attempted career out of writing about it.\u00a0 I have been unable to work.\u00a0 I have suffered and bitched about it.\u00a0 The worst thing is, before chronic pain, I was SO much more.\u00a0 I was a wife, a happily working social worker who one week before the incident had received a pretty great promotion. I had a life, a job, a purpose.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-167\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"entry-content\"><\/p>\n<p>Since my pain I have lost purpose.\u00a0 I wish I found some new age, crunchy, bullshit way of life that would make me say \u201cPain no longer defines me!\u201d but sadly that is not the case.\u00a0 I am trying to find myself.\u00a0 The first thing I did to find myself was start acting classes and it is the few hours per week I feel truly happy and truly present. When I act and am on stage I am ME.\u00a0 But then after the drive home, I come home to my apartment and all the reminders of what I was and no longer am and the depression and pity sets in again.\u00a0 Yes, I said pity.<\/p>\n<p>People like to think they don\u2019t pity themselves when they are in pain, but we all know that is not true.\u00a0 I don\u2019t stay days wallowing in the self pity of living a life of pain, discomfort and disappointment, but I have my share of pity, party of 1.\u00a0 But what has that done for me?\u00a0 To date it has kept me from pursuing work, but that is out of the knowledge that I know my limitations and I simply cannot do 40 hours.\u00a0 I am trying to find a part-time job though because I need to have a career, a life.\u00a0 It has cost me the relationship I had with my husband, now strained to the point of possibly breaking and it has given me a permanent look of a bitter, unhappy OLD woman.<\/p>\n<p>When this happened, I lost myself.\u00a0 When I look in the mirror I am unrecognizable from the woman I was 2 years ago.\u00a0 I was on my game, I was looking towards a family, I had gotten a promotion, I had my friends, my family and my husband.\u00a0 Now, everything is in limbo- my career, my marriage and my purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So what do I do?\u00a0 How do I not let pain define me even though it is what I deal with all the time?
