{"id":36,"date":"2020-01-05T07:37:24","date_gmt":"2020-01-05T14:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/painvalley.com\/?p=36"},"modified":"2020-03-04T20:55:19","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T03:55:19","slug":"fearing-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/painvalley.com\/?p=36","title":{"rendered":"Fearing the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><a title=\"Six Blue Circles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/55943778@N00\/3835549101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Six Blue Circles\" alt=\"Six Blue Circles\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3571\/3835549101_7b1dbb87ec.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recently I had a major life change in addition to the chronic pain that has left me fearing my future.\u00a0 It is natural for anyone to fear their future when something happens that drastically changes their lives.\u00a0 However, when you live with a disability or chronic pain, the future can seem even more terrifying.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"entry-content\"><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-183\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because of my physical issues related to pain and the fact the stress has multiplied the pain to an unbearable degree, work is difficult for me.\u00a0 I am looking for part-time work and I write.\u00a0 I am trying to pursue a dream but the problem is dreams, and jobs for that matter, take a certain level of physical exertion that is proving difficult.\u00a0 I can handle a couple hours of sitting and about an hour of standing.\u00a0 Put together, that doesn\u2019t leave a 40-hour work week in the cards at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Many people who live with chronic pain probably face similar issues.\u00a0 If I am 34 and have a hard time taking care of myself, what will my life be at 40? 50? 60?\u00a0 Will I ever be successful and if so, in what?\u00a0 I have always been told \u201cYou are taking a long time to find yourself.\u201d\u00a0 When I got injured I stopped looking altogether.\u00a0 But what does it mean to find you?<\/p>\n<p>Does it mean to find a job and make money?\u00a0 To find a passion?\u00a0 What if your passion and your job are not the same?\u00a0 And what if neither of those is possible right now?\u00a0 How do you find yourself when you don\u2019t even feel like yourself anymore?\u00a0 I feel like, besides my few classes, that the real me disappeared a while ago.\u00a0 The core is still there, but the things that made me \u201cme,\u201d the passion, the desire, the go-get-it is gone.<\/p>\n<p>There are people who live with chronic pain their whole lives and still manage to be successful, but the future is a terrifying prospect when it\u2019s hard to see past the next procedure, doctor visit or test, all while hoping someone, somehow, will come up with a way to help you.\u00a0 Sometimes it seems as if my future is nothing more than waiting to win the \u201cmedical lottery\u201d where someone will finally say, \u201coh, this is what the problem is, here is how we fix it.\u201d And even so, the longer we live a half life in chronic pain, will we still be the same if they find a cure?<\/p>\n<p>Photo courtesy of\u00a0<a title=\"Attribution License\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Creative Commons License\" alt=\"Creative Commons License\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.psychcentral.com\/chronic-pain\/wp-content\/plugins\/compfight\/images\/cc.png\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/55943778@N00\/3835549101\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"newwin\">qthomasbower<\/a>\u00a0via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.compfight.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"newwin\">Compfight<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I had a major life change in addition to the chronic pain that has left me fearing my future.\u00a0 It is natural for anyone to fear their future when something happens that drastically changes their lives.\u00a0 However, when you live with a disability or chronic pain, the future can seem even more terrifying.
